Clarens is definitely one of the most picturesque and interestingsmall towns in South Africa. The town is surrounded by the Rooiberge and is situated at the foot of Mount Horeb, with stunning views of the Maloti Berge and only 20 km from Golden Gate National Park. Clarens has become known as the “Jewel of the Free State” due to the beauty of its unspoiled natural surroundings.
The town is known for it sandstone formations, sandstone houses, colorful blossoms in spring, gifts, art shops and galleries. This wonderful art-paradisealso offers an overload of activities for adventurers-lovers like rowing, white water rafting, abseiling, quad biking, fly fishing, walking, mountain biking, horse riding and golf.The village of Clarensoffers an abundance of restaurants, coffee shops and interesting little shops for the browser.There are also a number of interesting historical and fossil sites in the Clarens vicinity. For those who need a bit of pampering there are also spa facilities.
There is also the Clarens Craft Brewery where you can sit back and sip on a freshly brewed beer or cider at the foothills of the Maluti Mountains. The Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve is another great place to enjoy the outdoors in Clarens.
In Fouriesburg (30km), there’s an Asparagus Festival round about September and in Ficksburg (83km), the Cherry Festival takes place in November each year.
Clarens is also an ideal stop over en route to Lesotho, the Drakensberg, Sani pass and Afriski resort in Lesotho.
Every Saturday Clarens Park Run takes place over a hilly terrain with spectacular views of the Maluti Mountains.
